1 John 5:6–12
In a courtroom, a verdict is established by the testimony of reliable witnesses. The stronger the witnesses, the stronger the case. That is exactly what John is doing in this passage. He calls witness after witness to the stand, all testifying to one glorious truth: Jesus Christ is the Son of God and eternal life is found in Him alone.
Many study Bibles describe this passage as the testimony of three witnesses—the water, the blood, and the Spirit. While those are certainly John’s primary witnesses, when you step back and look at the whole passage, you discover even more testimony pointing us to Christ. The Father bears witness. Believers bear witness. Eternal life itself bears witness.
John leaves us with overwhelming evidence.
The question is no longer whether God has spoken.
The question is whether we will believe His testimony.
The Witness of the Water
John writes,
“This is he who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood” (1 John 5:6).
The water points us to the baptism of Jesus.
All four Gospel writers record that remarkable event. As Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened, the Holy Spirit descended like a dove, and the Father declared,
“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
Jesus’ baptism was far more than the beginning of His public ministry.
It was the Father’s public testimony concerning His Son.
At His baptism we see the Trinity beautifully displayed. The Son stands in the water. The Spirit descends from heaven. The Father speaks from heaven.
God Himself testified that Jesus is His beloved Son.
The Witness of the Blood
John next points us to the blood.
The blood reminds us of Christ’s death upon the cross.
When Jesus died, God did not leave the world without witnesses.
Darkness covered the land from noon until three in the afternoon.
The curtain in the temple was torn from top to bottom, opening the way into God’s presence.
The earth shook.
Rocks split apart.
Even the graves were opened, and many saints were raised after Christ’s resurrection.
These were not random events.
They were God’s declaration that the death of His Son was the defining moment of redemption.
Even the hardened Roman centurion who watched Jesus die confessed,
“Truly this was the Son of God.”
The cross forever testifies that Jesus is exactly who He claimed to be.
His blood accomplished what the blood of countless Old Testament sacrifices never could. Through His sacrifice, forgiveness was secured once for all.
Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins, and only the blood of Christ is sufficient to save.
The Witness of the Holy Spirit
John then reminds us,
“The Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth” (v. 6).
Jesus Himself promised this ministry of the Holy Spirit.
“When the Helper comes…He will bear witness about me” (John 15:26).
The Holy Spirit has always pointed people to Christ.
He was present at Jesus’ miraculous conception.
He descended upon Jesus at His baptism.
He empowered His earthly ministry.
He guided Him throughout His obedience to the Father.
Jesus later declared,
“He will glorify me.”
That has always been the Spirit’s work.
The Holy Spirit never seeks attention for Himself.
He continually points sinners to Jesus Christ.
As John MacArthur observed, because the Spirit is the Spirit of truth, His testimony concerning Christ is perfectly trustworthy.
The Witness of the Father
John continues,
“If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater” (vv. 9–10).
John argues from the lesser to the greater.
Under God’s Law, important matters were established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.
If we readily accept the testimony of men, how much more should we believe the testimony of God Himself?
Unlike sinful humanity, God cannot lie.
Hebrews reminds us that it is impossible for God to lie.
We live in a world filled with broken promises and unreliable voices, but God’s testimony is always true.
To reject Jesus Christ is not merely to disagree with Christianity.
John says it is to reject God’s own testimony concerning His Son.
As Charles Spurgeon powerfully stated, one word from God outweighs ten thousand words from men. God’s witness is greater than every philosopher, skeptic, or critic because He alone speaks perfect truth.
The Witness of Believers
John also reminds us that those who believe possess God’s testimony within themselves.
Every Christian becomes a living witness.
We are walking testimonies of God’s saving grace.
Our transformed lives testify that Christ truly saves sinners.
Someone once said there are five Gospels, and many people will read the believer before they ever read Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John.
Whether that statement is literally true or not, it reminds us of an important responsibility.
The world is watching.
Our words.
Our integrity.
Our love.
Our faithfulness.
All proclaim something about Jesus Christ.
The Witness of Eternal Life
John concludes with perhaps the greatest testimony of all.
“And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life” (vv. 11–12).
John makes the issue beautifully simple.
Life is not found in religion.
Life is not found in morality.
Life is not found in church attendance.
Life is found in Jesus Christ.
As James Boice observed, eternal life is not merely endless existence. It is the very life of God shared with those who belong to Christ.
It is impossible to possess eternal life apart from Jesus because eternal life is found in Him alone.
The Bible never tells believers merely to hope they possess eternal life.
John says we can know.
If you have the Son, you have life.
If you do not have the Son, you do not have life.
There is no middle ground.
Head — What We Must Know
God has supplied overwhelming testimony that Jesus Christ is His Son. The witnesses of His baptism, His cross, the Holy Spirit, the Father, the transformed believer, and the gift of eternal life all point to the same conclusion. Eternal life is found in Christ alone, and God’s testimony is greater than every human opinion.
Heart — What We Must Feel
This passage should fill us with confidence in the reliability of God’s Word and gratitude for the gift of eternal life. Rather than doubting God’s promises or being swayed by the world’s opinions, our hearts should rest in the certainty that God has spoken truthfully concerning His Son.
Hands — What We Must Do
Believe God’s testimony instead of the opinions of the world. Every day competing voices attempt to redefine who Jesus is, but God’s Word alone tells us the truth. Build your faith upon His testimony rather than popular culture or human opinion.
Receive the Son and receive life. Eternal life is not found in religion, morality, or personal effort. It is found in Jesus Christ alone. If you have never trusted Him, repent and believe the gospel.
Remember that rejecting Christ is rejecting God’s own testimony. Every person must answer the question: Will I believe what God has said about His Son?
Rest in the certainty of your salvation. If your faith is in Jesus Christ, your assurance rests not in your performance but in God’s unchanging promise.
Live as Christ’s witness. Through your words, your character, your love, and your perseverance, let others see the transforming power of the gospel.
Proclaim Christ boldly. God has openly testified concerning His Son through His Word, His Spirit, His works, and the cross. We should joyfully do the same.
Walk each day as someone who possesses eternal life. Because Christ has given you His life, live differently. Worship deeply, forgive freely, endure faithfully, and love generously as one who has been made alive through Him.
Conclusion
John has placed witness after witness before us.
The water.
The blood.
The Holy Spirit.
The Father.
The testimony within every believer.
The gift of eternal life.
Together they all declare the very same truth.
Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
The evidence is overwhelming.
The witnesses have spoken.
Now every person must answer the question.
Will you believe God’s testimony?
If you have the Son, rejoice, because you have life—life that begins now and continues forever.
But if you do not have the Son, come to Him today. Believe God’s testimony, trust in Jesus Christ alone, and receive the gift of eternal life that only He can give.
For whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
